How it works

How your child's progress shapes the next lesson.

PrimerBot is being designed to build an evolving picture of what your child understands. Its AI uses that picture to create lessons, adjust the teaching, and choose what to work on next, guided by a curriculum informed by research and experts.

The AI tutor

What the AI does for your child.

Every answer tells PrimerBot something new. It is designed to analyze each attempt, see where your child needs help, and steer every session toward the skills they need next, so their time goes where it helps most.

  1. Builds an evolving picture

Builds an evolving picture of every reading skill, from the very first session.

  2. Finds where they need help

Spots what's solid, what needs another look, and what hasn't been taught yet, and keeps checking as your child grows.

  3. Creates each lesson

Uses that picture to decide what to teach next and how: more practice, a new way to explain, or the next step on the path.

  4. Checks without hints

Steps back and asks for a brand-new word with no in-app hint.

  5. Remembers

Comes back days later to recheck earlier skills, and picks up where your child left off.

Every session, PrimerBot adjusts the teaching based on what your child just showed.

Experts shape the curriculum and what PrimerBot can teach. PrimerBot's AI creates the next lesson for your child within that curriculum.

The tutoring loop

How PrimerBot tutors, every session.

A useful next step might be more practice, another explanation, or a new challenge. PrimerBot is being built to use the child's responses to make that choice and create the lesson around it.

Find a starting point.

In the first session, short, playful checks are designed to find what your child already knows, so the teaching can start there.

Built on what reading research supports.

The U.S. Institute of Education Sciences reviewed the research on teaching foundational reading skills in grades K–3.1 What PrimerBot teaches is built around three of its recommendations, within a curriculum informed by research and expert guidance.

Connect sounds to letters.

Develop awareness of the sounds in speech and how they link to letters.

Strong evidence

Decode words.

Teach children to decode words and analyze word parts.

Strong evidence

Read real text every day.

Ensure children read connected text daily for accuracy, fluency, and comprehension.

Moderate evidence

These practices are well supported by research. We'll evaluate PrimerBot itself as the product develops and share what we learn.

A patient tutor with good manners.

PrimerBot is warm, patient, and honest about what it is.

It says:

Let's read a little.

Your turn.

I didn't quite hear that. Let's try once more.

Let's try it a new way.

All done for now.

It never says:

"I missed you." · "I'm your best friend." · "Don't go." · Anything that asks for personal information.
